Question 1 - In what ways does your media products use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Blink 182 - Up All Night
Camera Shots
These six pictures show the similarities between our music video of 'Blink 182' and the official music video of 'up all night' from Blink 182.
The first 2 pictures show a performance based shot, our band are jumping and playing their instruments as are Blink 182 in their music video. Both the bands are of mid/long shot as well as being head on to the camera. This not only gives the audience a head on view of the band but also establishes the typical formation of a 3 piece punk rock band.
The second shots shows a typical camera angle of the lead singer of the band. At a low angle, the singer has power and helps the viewer to see the band in a more quirky perspective.
This shot shows composition by using the rule of thirds, each of the band members in the picture are moving which results in the camera having to be a tracking shot to show this movement. This helps gives movement to the video so that it is more visually pleasing for the audience.
Mise en Scene
These six pictures show the similarities between our music video of 'Blink 182' and the official music video of 'up all night' from Blink 182.
The first 2 pictures show the costumes used in each music video. In our music video we used a morph suit and int he original blink video a guy on a bike is wearing cape and a motorcycle helmet. These foolish costumes add an interesting aspect to the music videos making the videos visually pleasing, interesting and engrossing for the audience. We followed the conventions of a punk pop video by using a morph suit as it isn't something that you expect in a non pop punk music video.
The second two pictures show the conventional outfits of a pop punk band. The backwards placed snap backs and plain-ish t-shirts are something the audience expects from a band like Blink 182, therefore we dressed our band members like this to follow the conventions. our lead singer also had his guitar with him, something you'd also expect from a pop punk music video.
The last picture shows the conventional props used in a pop punk music video. Skateboards are something that are highly and so we integrated a skateboard into our music video to follow this convention. We also used quirky and silly behavior as well as the skateboard to add to the 'fun' and 'carefree' nature of these videos.

Camera shots
These six pictures show the similarities between our music video of 'Blink 182' and anothe rpop punk band Sum 41
The first two shots are an establishing shot (long shot) of the band. Using this type of shot gives the audience an insight into what the band members looks like and their behaviour due to their actions in the shot.
The second two shots shows another typical low angle shot of a band member singing and playing their instrument. This shot helps reinforce the quirkiness of the music video and to help the vary the camera angles of the music video.
Throughout the music video, the use of fast paced shots and jump cuts adds an exciting and energetic element to the music video. This is typical of a pop punk music video
Mis en Scene
The first shot puts emphasis on the quirkiness and wacky nature of the music videos. The intergration of animals gives an extra aspect to the music video and shows out of the box thinking.
The second shots yet agains shows the typical use of skateboards that follows the conventions of a typical pop punk video
The third pictures gives a comical aspect to the music video and is humourous for the audience to watch the band members falling over.
The fourth shows the typical 'jumping' and performance that is known in pop punk videos so we encorporated this into our music video to follow these conventions.

Question 3: What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Audience feed back is important because it allows us to take in other points of view and then think about what we could have possible done better to improve our own work. It helps us improve because other people will see flaws that we wont see and maybe have adapted ideas to the ones that we already have.
We set our target audience between 16- 21 so we asked people that were 17-18 years of age to help us with feed back as they are within the target audience boundaries.
A questionnaire was given out to our feedbackers as they watched the music video. the questions were typical, what was good? what was bad? and how would you improve it questions. Many of the people that gave feed back said that the shots were too shaky through out the video, however we did some research into the way that the actual band and genre filmed there music videos and we discovered these were shaky to give more of an atmosphere to it so we took this in to consideration and applied it to our own work
On the first Performance, people said that they didn't like the red tint as it didn't look white balanced as it appeared dark, but it it wasn't it tint it was a red light that was used as part of the set as this is also how we intended it to look from the research that we gathered from previous videos. they also said that the narrative was unclear but we think that they misunderstood because the narrative is only at the beginning and fits with ever lyric of the song.
The positive feedback we had on the video was that all the shots were well framed and were very clear, all the shots were in range, all of our material was appropriate to the task that was said, the overall editing was strong and the pace was quick and on our questionnaire no one rated us less that a 7 out of 10, all affects were used appropriately and that the lip syncing was very good.
Good aspects |
Poor aspects |
Using wordle, we have created a mind map of all the positive and negative feedback from our first screening. By typing up all of the comments from our peers, the wordle has cleverly shown which ones were most popular by making the images bigger. For example, our peers thought that our performance and narrative were really good and that they fit in with our genre. However, our peers also thought that the camera was shaky and that we had poor lighting but they did not know that this was intentional for us to create the capture the genre
This is an example of one of the feedback sheets that we acquired after the screening to our peers. This sums up on average the kind of feedback that we were given. They thought our video was an A grade standard and that we had very good lip syncing, shot types were clear and well framed and that mise - en - scene was well chosen and suitable for our band. We then created an average out of all of the marks that our peers gave us and we came out with a 34 overall mark score They were honest and said that we had some shaky shots but this was intentional. Overall, we are happy with the feedback and feel that we impressed our peers.
The information that we got back from feedback suggests that we didn't have to change any thing to meet our audiences needs so therefore we didn't change anything.
We do agree with the majority of feed back, however some of the negative comments that the people who took part suggest that they didn't really understand the genre as what they picked up on things that were intentional due to the research we did at the start of the project.
The process of using a questionnaire could be unreliable as people may not take it seriously and put a full effort into answering questions which may not very good feed back

They follow the conventions of what an audience expects from a pop punk music video. They use of vibrant colours and patterns make the websites interesting to look at and visually pleasing. They also have tour dates/social networking sites/videos and chances to create a membership on them, this allows the audience to get involved in the bands life and keep check on what theyre doing and if they are coming to tour near them. The digipaks follow the suit of the websites and show alot of the conventual 'pop punk' bright colours/cartoon styles.
There are many direct links between these digipaks/websites and that of our own, we have added a comical style to our digipaks by using the mannequines in a comical way and have them posing in silly positions. We have also used bright coloured paint splodges to make them visually pleasing and inteetsing to loos at. On the website we used contrasting between the mannequins and the black background to make them stand out.
The blink 182 digipak is extremely busy and has alot going on in it, this is the same has our digipak; we have stacked many images on top of eachother so that it is busy and not much blank space. The green day website has used cross's on their links to make it look interesting. Our website uses skateboards in the same way. Skateboards also fit in with the pop punk themese which is what audiences' expect.
